About us
For 13 years Down to Earth Gloucestershire has been developing local food initiatives.
These local food initiatives now include three Community Growing Schemes for small groups of volunteers, three Gardening on Prescription projects for people with health issues that would benefit from growing food, allotments, a Community Seed Bank, The Fruit Exchange and regular events such as Potato Day.
After running a pilot project for a year we have set up a new organisation called Local Community Market Gardens (LCMG) to enable us to grow on a greater scale. We are delighted to say we have found a field in Sheepscombe called Harry’s Field which we have on a long term lease.
Organic local food
Food awareness and values are changing, food habits are evolving. Shorter food chains, fewer road miles, more biodiversity, and working with the environment are foremost in the minds of many. We all want to care about our community and environment, but we also want good quality, organic local food throughout the year.
Through growing organic food, Local Community Market Gardens can create a resilient, self sufficient and connected community.
Alongside ever increasing uncertainty in our food supplies and systems, growing more organic food is a kind of food insurance that could help to protect us from any recession or shortages in the future.
The lifestyle benefits and health dividends of being involved in or supporting community projects, at any level, are well proven.
Monoculture farming doesn’t have to be the only model for growing our food for the future. No dig will help us to grow healthy food for healthy people – the health of our soil is vital.
This is an opportunity to bring fruit and vegetable growing back into a local community – small scale organic farming at the heart of where people need it.
